Company History

Natsume Inc. was founded in 1987 in Tokyo, Japan, operating as both a developer and publisher of video games. The company established itself through partnerships with major publishers and became best known in Western markets as the longtime publisher of the Harvest Moon (Bokujō Monogatari) farming simulation series, though the games were actually developed by Victor Interactive Software (later Marvelous).

As a developer, Natsume created several well-regarded titles. Shadow of the Ninja (1990) for the NES was a challenging action-platformer in the Ninja Gaiden mold. Wild Guns (1994) for the SNES combined gallery shooter mechanics with Wild West and steampunk aesthetics, achieving cult status and receiving a modern remaster. The Ninja Warriors series and Pocky & Rocky (developed with Taito) demonstrated Natsume's ability to create polished action games.

The company's relationship with the Bokujō Monogatari franchise became complicated in 2014 when Marvelous created XSEED Games as their Western publishing arm. Marvelous retained the original series (rebranded as "Story of Seasons" in the West) while Natsume kept the "Harvest Moon" trademark, creating competing farm simulation franchises. This resulted in Natsume developing their own Harvest Moon games independently.

Natsume Atari (the Japanese entity) and Natsume Inc. (the US subsidiary) have operated as effectively separate companies since 2014. Natsume continues publishing games and developing new Harvest Moon entries, while also maintaining a catalog of classic titles through digital re-releases.

Behind the Scenes

Natsume's development teams demonstrated particular expertise in action games with tight controls and satisfying mechanics. Wild Guns exemplified this strength — a gallery shooter where players simultaneously controlled a character on the playfield and an aiming cursor, requiring split attention between dodging and shooting. This dual-control scheme was unusual and demanded precision, but Natsume's implementation made it intuitive.

The studio's NES work showed technical competence within hardware limitations. Shadow of the Ninja featured two-player simultaneous gameplay, smooth animations, and responsive controls. These qualities — polish, responsiveness, playability — defined Natsume's in-house development.

The publishing side of Natsume's business involved extensive localization work. The company developed expertise in adapting Japanese games for Western audiences, handling translation, marketing, and distribution. This dual identity as both developer and localizer gave Natsume insights into both creative and business aspects of game production.

The Harvest Moon trademark dispute highlighted the complexity of international game publishing relationships. For years, Western players associated "Harvest Moon" with the Bokujō Monogatari series, but the trademark belonged to Natsume rather than the original developers. When the relationship ended, both companies found themselves in awkward positions — Marvelous needing to rebuild brand recognition under "Story of Seasons," while Natsume created new games under the familiar name but without the original creative team. The situation illustrates how brand names and creative development can become separated in complex licensing arrangements.
